Sistemas de ecuaciones para la PAU: Gauss, Cramer y Rouché, con ejemplos resueltos y un simulacroSystems of equations for the PAU: Gauss, Cramer and Rouché, with worked examples and a mock exam

Sociales II.Systems of equations at the PAU are always the same job: say how many solutions there are and find them. Here is how to read it from the last row, Gauss and Cramer step by step, how to discuss a system with a parameter, and a 40-minute mock with a rubric. It works for Maths II and for Social Sciences Maths II.

Parte 1Part 1

A system can only end in three ways. If you can recognise them, you already have half the exercise.

Las tres salidas se leen en la última filaThe three outcomes are read from the last row

SCDnúmero = númeronumber = numberUna solución. Rg(A) = Rg(A') = n.º de incógnitas.One solution. Rank(A) = Rank(A') = number of unknowns.
SCI0 = 0Infinitas soluciones. Infinitely many solutions. Rank(A) = Rank(A'), less than the unknowns. You lost an equation because it was dependent.
SI0 = número0 = numberNinguna solución. Rg(A) ≠ Rg(A'). Es una contradicción.No solution. Rank(A) ≠ Rank(A'). It is a contradiction.
01 · forma matricial01 · matrix form

A holds the coefficients, X the column of unknowns and B the constants. A' is the augmented matrix: A with column B attached.

02 · Rouché02 · Rouché

Rouché-Fröbenius compara dos rangosRouché-Fröbenius compares two ranks

Un truco que ahorra cuentas: siempre se cumple Rg(A') ≥ Rg(A).Find Rank(A) and Rank(A'), and compare them with the number of unknowns. A shortcut that saves work: Rank(A') ≥ Rank(A) always holds.

03 · Gauss03 · Gauss

Put the easiest row on top. Use it to make zeros in one column. Then use the other two rows against each other. When one row has one zero and another has two, you are done: go back to equations and solve from the bottom up.

04 · Cramer04 · Cramer

It only works when |A| ≠ 0. Each unknown is the determinant with its column replaced by B, divided by |A|. There is a third route too: X = A−1·B, multiplying on the left.

If rank or determinants are shaky, start with matrices for the PAU.

Parte 2Part 2

Ejemplos resueltosWorked examples

These are the types that come up. Try each one before you open the solution.

Ejemplo 1: Gauss, una soluciónExample 1: Gauss, one solution

x + 2y + z = 82x − y + z = 33x + y − z = 2
Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. La primera fila ya tiene un 1 delante. Se queda arriba.The first row already starts with a 1. It stays on top.
  2. F2 − 2F1 da (0, −5, −1 | −13). F3 − 3F1 da (0, −5, −4 | −22).F2 − 2F1 gives (0, −5, −1 | −13). F3 − 3F1 gives (0, −5, −4 | −22).
  3. Las dos nuevas filas entre sí: F3 − F2 da (0, 0, −3 | −9). Ya hay un cero en una fila y dos en otra.The two new rows against each other: F3 − F2 gives (0, 0, −3 | −9). One row has one zero and another has two.
  4. De abajo arriba: −3z = −9, z = 3. Luego −5y − 3 = −13, y = 2. Por último x + 4 + 3 = 8, x = 1.Bottom up: −3z = −9, z = 3. Then −5y − 3 = −13, y = 2. Finally x + 4 + 3 = 8, x = 1.

Solución (1, 2, 3). Última fila número = número: SCD, con Rg(A) = Rg(A') = 3.Solution (1, 2, 3). Last row number = number: SCD, with Rank(A) = Rank(A') = 3.

Ejemplo 2: el mismo sistema por CramerExample 2: the same system with Cramer

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
|A| =1212−1131−1= 15
x =8213−1121−1/ 15 = 15/15 = 1
y =18123132−1/ 15 = 30/15 = 2
z =1282−13312/ 15 = 45/15 = 3

Each determinant is |A| with that unknown's column swapped for B. It matches Gauss, as it must.

Ejemplo 3: infinitas solucionesExample 3: infinitely many solutions

x − y + 2z = 12x − 2y + 4z = 2x + y + z = 4
Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. F2 − 2F1 da (0, 0, 0 | 0). Es 0 = 0: has perdido una ecuación porque era dependiente.F2 − 2F1 gives (0, 0, 0 | 0). That is 0 = 0: you lost an equation because it was dependent.
  2. F3 − F1 da (0, 2, −1 | 3). Quedan dos ecuaciones y tres incógnitas.F3 − F1 gives (0, 2, −1 | 3). Two equations and three unknowns remain.
  3. Llama z = λ, que hace de tercera ecuación. Entonces y = (3 + λ)/2.Call z = λ, which acts as the third equation. Then y = (3 + λ)/2.
  4. Sustituye en la primera: x = 1 + y − 2λ = (5 − 3λ)/2.Substitute in the first: x = 1 + y − 2λ = (5 − 3λ)/2.

SCI: ((5 − 3λ)/2, (3 + λ)/2, λ) con λ real. Comprueba con un valor: λ = 1 da (1, 2, 1), que cumple las tres ecuaciones.SCI: ((5 − 3λ)/2, (3 + λ)/2, λ) with real λ. Check a value: λ = 1 gives (1, 2, 1), which satisfies all three equations.

Ejemplo 4: ninguna soluciónExample 4: no solution

x + 2y − z = 12x + 4y − 2z = 5x − y + z = 0
Ver la soluciónSee the solution

F2 − 2F1 da (0, 0, 0 | 3), o sea 0 = 3. Es una contradicción y no hace falta seguir.F2 − 2F1 gives (0, 0, 0 | 3), so 0 = 3. That is a contradiction and there is no need to go on.

SI: el sistema no tiene solución. Rg(A) ≠ Rg(A').SI: the system has no solution. Rank(A) ≠ Rank(A').

Ejemplo 5: discutir con un parámetroExample 5: discussing with a parameter

Discute el sistema según a, y resuélvelo para a = 2.Discuss the system in terms of a, and solve it for a = 2.

A' =121a + 1a11a − 11−113
Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. Determinante de A: |A| = 3 − 3a. Es 0 solo si a = 1.Determinant of A: |A| = 3 − 3a. It is 0 only when a = 1.
  2. Si a ≠ 1: Rg(A) = 3. Como Rg(A') ≥ Rg(A) y A' no puede pasar de 3, Rg(A') = 3 sin hacer cuentas. SCD.If a ≠ 1: Rank(A) = 3. Since Rank(A') ≥ Rank(A) and A' cannot exceed 3, Rank(A') = 3 with no work. SCD.
  3. Si a = 1: el menor de las dos primeras filas y columnas vale 1 − 2 = −1 ≠ 0, así que Rg(A) = 2.If a = 1: the minor from the first two rows and columns is 1 − 2 = −1 ≠ 0, so Rank(A) = 2.
  4. Para A' con a = 1, usa un menor que incluya B: columnas 2, 3 y B.For A' with a = 1, use a minor that includes B: columns 2, 3 and B.
212110−113= 7 ≠ 0

Rg(A') = 3 y Rg(A) = 2: para a = 1 el sistema es SI.Rank(A') = 3 and Rank(A) = 2: for a = 1 the system is SI.

Para a = 2 queda x + 2y + z = 3, 2x + y + z = 1, x − y + z = 3. F1 − F3 da 3y = 0, luego y = 0. Quedan x + z = 3 y 2x + z = 1, de donde x = −2 y z = 5.For a = 2 we get x + 2y + z = 3, 2x + y + z = 1, x − y + z = 3. F1 − F3 gives 3y = 0, so y = 0. That leaves x + z = 3 and 2x + z = 1, so x = −2 and z = 5.

a ≠ 1: SCD. a = 1: SI. Para a = 2, la solución es (−2, 0, 5).a ≠ 1: SCD. a = 1: SI. For a = 2, the solution is (−2, 0, 5).

Conviene saberlo: lo que más puntos cuestaGood to know: what costs the most marks

Reading 0 = 0 wrongly. A row 0 = 0 does not mean no solution. It means infinitely many.
Skipping the parameter case. If |A| = 0 for some value, that value needs its own study. Half the marks are there.
Finding Rank(A') without B. The deciding minor must include column B. If it does not, you are just looking at A again.
A| is not k·|A|. For an n × n matrix, |k·A| = kn·|A|, because k multiplies every row. In 3 × 3, |2A| = 8|A|. Multiplying a single row by k does multiply the determinant by k.
Watch the sign when subtracting. Expanding −m(m − 1) gives −m² + m. One sign here changes the critical value of the parameter.
  • No comprobar. Not checking. Substituting your solution into all three equations takes a minute and tells you whether you can move on.
