01 · cinemática y dinámica01 · kinematics and dynamics
Kinematics: position, velocity and acceleration. Dynamics: the forces that change them. The first three are vectors: an arrow with magnitude, direction and sense. "100 km/h" does not describe a motion until you say which way. That is why you work with axes and signs: the sign is the sense.
02 · las tres leyes02 · the three laws
Sin fuerza neta nada cambia; con fuerza, a = F/m; y toda fuerza tiene su parejaWithout net force nothing changes; with force, a = F/m; and every force has a partner
ΣF = m·a → a = ΣF / m
First law: a body at rest or at constant velocity stays that way if the net force is zero. On Earth everything ends up stopping because friction is a force; the brake is also an accelerator, just backwards. Second law: 100 N on 50 kg give 2 m/s²; on 100 kg, 1 m/s². Almost all engineering comes out of this equation. Third law: if you push the ground, the ground pushes you with the same force in the opposite sense. That is where the normal comes from.

Dibujar todas las fuerzas, elegir ejes, F = m·a en cada ejeDraw every force, choose axes, F = m·a on each axis
eje xx axis: m·ax = Fx − FR · eje yy axis: m·ay = N − P + Fy · ay = 0
A block on a surface always has its weight P = m·g downwards and the normal N, the surface's reaction, perpendicular to it. If you push it, the pull F appears and the friction FR against it. Axes: x parallel to the surface, y perpendicular. And a condition that is not in the statement but without which nothing is solved: the block neither sinks nor lifts, so ay = 0. It is a boundary condition. N comes from there, and friction comes from N.
04 · rozamiento04 · friction
El rozamiento es μ·N, y N no es siempre el pesoFriction is μ·N, and N is not always the weight
FR = μ·N · hieloice ≈ 0,1 · asfaltoasphalt ≈ 0,8 · nuncanever > 1
To move the block you do not beat its weight, you beat the friction. And friction depends on how hard the block presses on the floor: on N. If you pull slightly upwards, N drops and friction drops. If you push down, both rise. If the acceleration in x comes out negative when the block was at rest, the maximum friction exceeds the pull: the block does not start, a = 0 and the friction equals exactly what you pull. If it was already moving, it brakes.
05 · masa y peso05 · mass and weight
La masa va en kilos y no cambia; el peso es una fuerza y depende de dónde estésMass is in kilograms and does not change; weight is a force and depends on where you are

El volante también acelera, porque cambia la dirección del vector.68 kg weigh 666.4 N on Earth, 110.2 N on the Moon and 251.6 N on Mars. The mass is still 68 kg in all three places. On the space station gravity is almost the same as on the ground and yet they float: their path is curved, and curving a path demands an acceleration towards the centre that there equals g. Zero net force is not absence of forces; it is compensation. A car changes its velocity in three ways: accelerator, brake and steering wheel. The wheel accelerates too, because it changes the direction of the vector.

A 5000 kg elephant at 5 m/s carries 25,000 kg·m/s. A 1 g ant at 100 m/s, 0.1 kg·m/s. Linear momentum joins mass and velocity in one vector, and measures how hard something is to stop or how hard it pushes when it collides. It is the quantity that governs impacts, deflections and explosions. Do not confuse it with the moment of a force, which is something else: what makes a bar turn when you push far from the axis.
07 · lo que se conserva07 · what is conserved
En todo choque se conserva p; solo en el elástico se conserva además la energía cinéticaIn every collision p is conserved; only in the elastic one is kinetic energy conserved as well
m1v1 + m2v2 = m1v'1 + m2v'2 · ½m1v1² + ½m2v2² = ½m1v'1² + ½m2v'2²
If there are no outside forces, the system's linear momentum before the collision is the same as after: what one loses the other gains. That always holds. Kinetic energy, Ec = ½m·v², is conserved only if the collision is perfectly elastic: nothing deforms, there is no heat or noise. Two steel balls, almost. Two cars, no: they crumple, and that energy leaves. Notice that p carries the velocity to the first power, with its sign, and Ec carries it squared, without sign. That is why they give two different equations.

p antes = p despuésp before = p after → despejarsolve for v'1 → sustituir ensubstitute into Ec antesbefore = Ec despuésafter
Elastic collision: 10 kg at 20 m/s against 5 kg at rest. Before: p = 200 kg·m/s, Ec = 2000 J. After there are two velocities you do not know. Momentum: 200 = 10v'1 + 5v'2. Energy: 2000 = 5v'1² + 2.5v'2². Solve the first for v'1 = (200 − 5v'2)/10, put it into the second and you get a quadratic in v'2. One of its solutions is the one before the collision, v'2 = 0: the algebra does not know they collided. The other is the right one: v'2 = 26.67 m/s and v'1 = −6.67 m/s. The sign says it all: the 10 kg one bounces back. If you had assumed it kept going forwards, the sign corrects you.

e = (v'2 − v'1) / (v1 − v2) · e = 1 elásticoelastic · e = 0 quedan pegadosthey stick together
Compare the speed at which they separate afterwards with the speed at which they approached before. With e = 1 the collision is perfectly elastic and kinetic energy is conserved. With e = 0 it is perfectly inelastic: they leave together, with one velocity, and only p is conserved. Real collisions sit in between. With e known you do not need the energy equation: it replaces the second equation.

Una explosión es un choque al revés: p sigue valiendo lo mismoAn explosion is a collision in reverse: p still has the same value
If something at rest splits in two, the total momentum is still zero: the two parts leave in opposite senses and the lighter one, faster. A cannon recoils for that reason. Kinetic energy is not conserved here: it appears, out of the gunpowder or the muscles. The scheme is the same as in the collision, but reading time backwards.
