Campo gravitatorio para la PAU de Física: órbitas, Kepler y energías, con ejemplos resueltos y un simulacroThe gravitational field for the PAU Physics exam: orbits, Kepler and energies, with worked examples and a mock exam

The gravitational field in PAU Physics comes down to two things: adding vectors properly and knowing which formulas hold in each orbit. Here are the must-knows, five worked examples step by step, the usual traps and a 45-minute mock with a rubric.

Parte 1Part 1

Lo imprescindible del campo gravitatorioThe must-knows of the gravitational field

A field is a disturbance of space: a quantity defined at every point. One mass creates it, and another mass feels it.

01 · campo y fuerza01 · field and force

Intensidad por un lado, dirección por otroSize on one side, direction on the other

g = (GM/R²)·ur  ·  F = m·g

The part in front is the size and ur is the direction, with magnitude 1. The field depends on what creates it. The force also depends on what feels it: two people of 100 and 50 kg share the same g but have different weights.

02 · superposición02 · superposition

The gravitational field always points towards the mass. The method never changes: sketch, unit vector, size, add by components.

03 · potencial y energía03 · potential and energy

El potencial es un número, y se suma sin vectoresPotential is a number, added without vectors

V = −GM/R  ·  Ep = −GMm/R  ·  W = −ΔEp

R se mide de centro a centro: R = RT + h, no la altura.R is measured centre to centre: R = RT + h, not the height.

04 · Kepler04 · Kepler

Kepler sale de igualar dos fuerzasKepler comes from equating two forces

GMm/R² = m·v²/R  →  v = √(GM/R)  →  R³/T² = GM/4π²

In an ellipse the law holds with R replaced by the semi-major axis a. So two orbits with the same period have a = R.

05 · qué vale en cada órbita05 · what holds in each orbit

Antes de operar, haz la lista de lo que sabes de esa órbitaBefore calculating, list what you know about that orbit

ÓrbitaOrbitQué valeWhat holdsEnergía mecánicaMechanical energy
CircularCircularFg = Fc, MCU, Em y L constantesFg = Fc, uniform circular motion, Em and L constantEm = −GMm/2R
ElípticaEllipticalSolo Em y L constantes. En perigeo y apogeo: v1·r1 = v2·r2Only Em and L constant. At perigee and apogee: v1·r1 = v2·r2Em = −GMm/2a
06 · los tres casos de energía06 · the three energy cases

Puesta en órbita, cambio de órbita y escapeLaunch into orbit, changing orbit and escape

Launch into orbit: ΔE = −GMm/2R0 + GMm/RT, starting at rest on the surface.
  2. Cambio de órbita circular: ΔE = ½GMm(1/R1 − 1/R2).Changing circular orbit: ΔE = ½GMm(1/R1 − 1/R2).
  3. Escape: la energía final es 0, así que ve = √(2GM/R).Escape: the final energy is 0, so ve = √(2GM/R).

Ejemplos resueltosWorked examples

Usa G = 6,67·10−11 N·m²/kg², MT = 5,97·1024 kg y RT = 6,37·106 m. Use G = 6.67·10−11 N·m²/kg², MT = 5.97·1024 kg and RT = 6.37·106 m. Try each one before you open the solution.

Ejemplo 1: dos masas iguales y un campo dadoExample 1: two equal masses and a given field

Dos masas iguales m están en (0, 3) y (0, −3) m. Halla m para que el campo en P(4, 0) sea g = −2·10−9 i m/s².Two equal masses m sit at (0, 3) and (0, −3) m. Find m so that the field at P(4, 0) is g = −2·10−9 i m/s².

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. Escribe el dato como vector: g = (−2·10−9, 0).Write the data as a vector: g = (−2·10−9, 0).
  2. Distancias: R = 5 m en los dos casos, luego R² = 25.Distances: R = 5 m for both, so R² = 25.
  3. Unitarios, de P hacia cada masa: u1 = (−4/5, 3/5) y u2 = (−4/5, −3/5). Tienen módulo 1.Unit vectors, from P towards each mass: u1 = (−4/5, 3/5) and u2 = (−4/5, −3/5). Their magnitude is 1.
  4. Suma: las y se anulan por simetría y queda g = (−2·(Gm/25)·(4/5), 0).Add: the y parts cancel by symmetry, leaving g = (−2·(Gm/25)·(4/5), 0).
  5. Iguala componentes: 2·(Gm/25)·(4/5) = 2·10−9.Equate components: 2·(Gm/25)·(4/5) = 2·10−9.

m ≈ 4,7·10² kg.m ≈ 4.7·10² kg.

Ejemplo 2: el punto donde el campo se anulaExample 2: the point where the field vanishes

Una masa de 9 kg está en el origen y otra de 1 kg en (8, 6) m. Halla el punto entre ambas donde g = 0.A 9 kg mass sits at the origin and a 1 kg mass at (8, 6) m. Find the point between them where g = 0.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
The distance between the masses is 10 m. The point lies on the line joining them, at distance d from the 9 kg mass.
La G se va.The two fields are opposite, so equal sizes is enough: G·9/d² = G·1/(10 − d)². G cancels.
  3. Raíz: d/(10 − d) = 3, luego d = 7,5 m.Square root: d/(10 − d) = 3, so d = 7.5 m.
  4. Avanza 7,5 m en la dirección (8, 6)/10 = (0,8; 0,6).Move 7.5 m along the direction (8, 6)/10 = (0.8, 0.6).

P = (6; 4,5) m. It is closer to the small mass, as it must be.

Ejemplo 3: órbita circularExample 3: circular orbit

Un satélite orbita a 600 km de altura. Halla su velocidad, su período y g a esa altura.A satellite orbits at a height of 600 km. Find its speed, its period and g at that height.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. Centro a centro: R = 6,37·106 + 6·105 = 6,97·106 m.Centre to centre: R = 6.37·106 + 6·105 = 6.97·106 m.
  2. v = √(GM/R) ≈ 7,56·10³ m/s.v = √(GM/R) ≈ 7.56·10³ m/s.
  3. T = 2πR/v ≈ 5,79·10³ s, algo más de hora y media.T = 2πR/v ≈ 5.79·10³ s, a little over an hour and a half.
  4. g = GM/R² ≈ 8,20 m/s².g = GM/R² ≈ 8.20 m/s².

At 600 km there is plenty of gravity. A satellite does not float because g is missing: it floats because it is falling all the time.

A 1000 kg satellite takes 21,600 s to go from perigee to apogee. Its distance from the Earth's centre at perigee is 8.0·106 m. Find the semi-major axis, the apogee distance, the mechanical energy and the speeds at both points.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. De perigeo a apogeo es media órbita: T = 43 200 s.Perigee to apogee is half an orbit: T = 43,200 s.
  2. Kepler con a en lugar de R: a = ∛(GMT²/4π²) ≈ 2,66·107 m.Kepler with a in place of R: a = ∛(GMT²/4π²) ≈ 2.66·107 m.
  3. ra + rp = 2a, luego ra ≈ 4,52·107 m.ra + rp = 2a, so ra ≈ 4.52·107 m.
  4. Em = −GMm/2a ≈ −7,48·109 J.Em = −GMm/2a ≈ −7.48·109 J.
  5. Con esa energía en el perigeo: Em = −GMm/rp + ½mvp², de donde vp ≈ 9,20·10³ m/s.Using that energy at perigee: Em = −GMm/rp + ½mvp², so vp ≈ 9.20·10³ m/s.
  6. Momento angular: vp·rp = va·ra, la masa se cancela y va ≈ 1,63·10³ m/s.Angular momentum: vp·rp = va·ra, the mass cancels and va ≈ 1.63·10³ m/s.

Ejemplo 5: los tres casos de energíaExample 5: the three energy cases

A 500 kg satellite is placed in a circular orbit at 2000 km height, then raised to 10,000 km. How much energy does each step need, and how much to escape from the first orbit?

  1. Radios: R1 = 8,37·106 m y R2 = 1,637·107 m.Radii: R1 = 8.37·106 m and R2 = 1.637·107 m.
  2. Puesta en órbita: Ei ≈ −3,13·1010 J y Ef ≈ −1,19·1010 J, luego ΔE ≈ 1,94·1010 J.Launch: Ei ≈ −3.13·1010 J and Ef ≈ −1.19·1010 J, so ΔE ≈ 1.94·1010 J.
  3. Cambio de órbita: ΔE = ½GMm(1/R1 − 1/R2) ≈ 5,81·109 J.Orbit change: ΔE = ½GMm(1/R1 − 1/R2) ≈ 5.81·109 J.
  4. Escape desde la primera órbita: hay que llevar Em a 0, así que hacen falta 1,19·1010 J.Escape from the first orbit: Em must reach 0, so 1.19·1010 J are needed.

Conviene saberlo: lo que más puntos cuestaGood to know: what costs the most marks

Using height instead of radius. In every formula, R goes centre to centre.
Not normalising the vector. (−4, 3) is not a unit vector. Divide by its magnitude, or the size comes out wrong.
Forgetting the sign of g. The field points towards the mass, not outwards.
Using v = √(GM/R) in an ellipse. In an elliptical orbit you only have constant Em and L.
  • El orden del producto vectorial. L = r × p = m(r × v). Si cambias el orden, cambia el signo. Al usar solo el módulo no se nota: |L| = m·v·r·sen θ.The order of the cross product. L = r × p = m(r × v). Swap the order and the sign flips. With the magnitude alone you will not notice: |L| = m·v·r·sin θ.
  • Mezclar unidades. Mixing units. Convert km to m before substituting anything.
