Funciones lineales en 1º de Bachillerato con casos de empresa: beneficio, punto de equilibrio y márgenes, con simulador y simulacroLinear functions in Year 12 with business cases: profit, break-even and margins, with a simulator and a mock exam

Linear functions in Year 12 are easier with a business in front of you: the profit function is a line, what does not depend on the customers is the intercept, what does is the slope, and knowing when you go from losses to profit is solving an equation. Here are the must-knows, seven worked cases, a simulator to move fixed costs, variable costs, price and number of customers, and a 60-minute mock with a rubric.

Parte 1Part 1

Everything below boils down to a line, and a line has only two numbers: where it starts and how much it climbs per step. In a business those two numbers have names.

01 · qué es una función01 · what a function is

Una función es una transformación: entra un número y sale otroA function is a transformation: a number goes in and another comes out

Eso es lo que la hace útil: te deja predecir.f(x) = x + 2 turns 3 into 5 and 10 into 12. f(x) = 2x turns 3 into 6. x is any number: when you read x, think "whatever I put in". And the same transformation works for every number, not just one. That is what makes it useful: it lets you predict.

02 · la recta02 · the line

If you draw the function you get a line, and the line gives you the result for any x without calculating: go up from x to the line and read the height. n is the intercept, the value at x = 0. m is the slope, how much the result rises or falls each time x grows by 1. If m is negative, the line goes down.

03 · modelizar03 · modelling

Modelizar es elegir la x y montar la función; lo fijo no lleva x, lo variable síModelling is choosing x and building the function; fixed items carry no x, variable ones do

B(x) = (If − Gf) + (p − c)·x

The independent variable is what you cannot control mathematically: the number of customers. Fixed costs (premises, electricity, staff you already have) do not depend on the customers and carry no x. Fixed revenue (what you already bill) does not either. For each new customer you earn p and spend c, and that does carry x. Revenue adds, costs subtract. What is left after grouping the x terms is the slope, p − c: the margin per customer. What is left without x is the intercept: your situation with zero new customers.

04 · punto de equilibrio04 · break-even point

Para pasar de pérdidas a beneficios hay que cruzar el ceroTo go from losses to profit you must cross zero

B(x) = 0  →  x* = Gf / (p − c)

Siempre hacia arriba. If yesterday you lost 500 € and today you make 2000 €, at some point your profit was exactly zero. That moment is where the line crosses the x axis. Set the function equal to zero and you no longer have a function, you have an equation: one x to find. It almost always has decimals, 28.57 customers, and you read it like this: with 28 there are losses, with 29 profit. Always round up.

05 · resolver la ecuación05 · solving the equation

Ejemplo: 0 = −2000 + 70x → 2000 = 70x → x = 2000/70 = 28,57. Y menos entre menos es más.What adds moves across subtracting; what multiplies moves across dividing. Only one change per step: a number that is subtracting and moves to the other side changes sign; a negative number that is multiplying and moves across dividing stays negative. Example: 0 = −2000 + 70x → 2000 = 70x → x = 2000/70 = 28.57. And minus over minus is plus.

06 · márgenes06 · margins

With 40 customers at 150 € and 80 € of cost each, and 2000 € fixed: revenue 6000, costs 5200, profit 800 €. That 800 is the money margin. As a percentage it depends on what you compare it with: on revenue, 800/6000 = 13.3 % of what you bill is yours; on costs, 800/5200 = 15.4 % above what it costs you. Both figures are correct and they are not the same: always say which one you use. And it is profit before tax and depreciation.

Two different skills: modelling, going from the business to the function, and analysing, seeing where it crosses, how much it climbs and what happens if you change a figure. Any program does the second. Not the first: you decide what is fixed, what is variable and what x is. And when a figure is uncertain, apply a safety factor: a structure that fails at 300 N is certified for 200 with a factor of 1.5. Same with a business: divide the expected profit by 1.5, or estimate costs on the high side.

Parte 2Part 2

Casos resueltos de funciones lineales con empresasWorked cases of linear functions with businesses

Siete negocios inventados. Seven made-up businesses. In all of them the question is the same: build the function, picture it and ask where it crosses zero. Try each one before opening the solution.

A service company pays 2400 € a month for premises, electricity and insurance. Each customer pays it 160 € a month and costs it 90 € a month to serve. Build the profit function, find how many customers it needs to stop losing money, and the profit and margins with 50 customers.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. x = número de clientes. Fijo: −2400 (es un gasto, resta). Por cliente: +160x − 90x. B(x) = −2400 + 160x − 90x = −2400 + 70x. Fixed: −2400 (a cost, it subtracts). Per customer: +160x − 90x. B(x) = −2400 + 160x − 90x = −2400 + 70x. The margin per customer is 70 €.
  2. Equilibrio: 0 = −2400 + 70x → 2400 = 70x → x* = 34,29. Con 34 clientes pierde, con 35 gana.Break-even: 0 = −2400 + 70x → 2400 = 70x → x* = 34.29. With 34 customers it loses, with 35 it earns.
  3. Con 50: B(50) = −2400 + 3500 = 1100 €. Ingresos 160·50 = 8000; gastos 2400 + 90·50 = 6900.With 50: B(50) = −2400 + 3500 = 1100 €. Revenue 160·50 = 8000; costs 2400 + 90·50 = 6900.
  4. Márgenes: sobre ingresos 1100/8000 = 13,8 %; sobre costes 1100/6900 = 15,9 %.Margins: on revenue 1100/8000 = 13.8 %; on costs 1100/6900 = 15.9 %.

B(x) = 70x − 2400. Equilibrio en 35 clientes. Con 50, 1100 € de margen monetario.B(x) = 70x − 2400. Break-even at 35 customers. With 50, 1100 € money margin.

A small builder has 26,000 € a month in fixed costs and 30,000 € a month in fixed revenue from the jobs it already has. Each new job brings 12,000 € a month and costs 8000 € a month. What is the profit function in new jobs? What does the break-even mean here?

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
With zero new jobs: 30,000 − 26,000 = 4000 € profit. It is the intercept, and it is positive: the line starts above zero.
  2. Por obra nueva: 12 000 − 8000 = 4000 €. B(x) = 4000 + 4000x.Per new job: 12,000 − 8000 = 4000 €. B(x) = 4000 + 4000x.
  3. Equilibrio: 0 = 4000 + 4000x → x* = −1. Break-even: 0 = 4000 + 4000x → x* = −1. Negative: you need no new jobs to make a profit, and if you lose one of those you have, you drop to zero.

A negative break-even is a safety margin: how many customers you can lose before going into losses.

A business has 1500 € fixed a month, charges 60 € per customer and spends 75 € per customer. Build the function, say whether a break-even exists, and find the minimum price to avoid losing money with 50 customers.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. B(x) = −1500 + 60x − 75x = −1500 − 15x. Pendiente negativa: cada cliente resta 15 €.B(x) = −1500 + 60x − 75x = −1500 − 15x. Negative slope: each customer subtracts 15 €.
  2. 0 = −1500 − 15x → x = −100. No positive number of customers fixes this: more customers, more losses.
Minimum price p with 50 customers: 0 = −1500 + (p − 75)·50 → p − 75 = 30 → p = 105 €. Below 75 € the problem is not the price: the cost per customer is larger than what you charge.

Always look at the sign of the slope before looking for the break-even. If it is negative, the answer is not selling more.

¿Y 20 000 €?A workshop has 3000 € fixed a month, charges 200 € per job and spends 120 € in materials per job. How many jobs a month does it need to make 5000 €? And 20,000 €?

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. B(x) = −3000 + 80x.B(x) = −3000 + 80x.
  2. El objetivo no es cero, es 5000: 5000 = −3000 + 80x → 8000 = 80x → x = 100 trabajos.The target is not zero, it is 5000: 5000 = −3000 + 80x → 8000 = 80x → x = 100 jobs.
  3. Para 20 000: 23 000 = 80x → x = 287,5 → 288 trabajos.For 20,000: 23,000 = 80x → x = 287.5 → 288 jobs.

It is the same equation as the break-even with zero replaced by the target: x = (target + fixed costs)/margin per customer.

Caso 5: dos estrategias, dos rectasCase 5: two strategies, two lines

Strategy A: small premises, 1000 € fixed and 50 € margin per customer. Strategy B: large premises with more staff, 4000 € fixed and 90 € margin per customer. From how many customers does B pay off? What is each one's break-even?

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. BA(x) = 50x − 1000. BB(x) = 90x − 4000.BA(x) = 50x − 1000. BB(x) = 90x − 4000.
  2. Equilibrios: A en 1000/50 = 20 clientes; B en 4000/90 = 44,4 → 45 clientes. B tarda más en dejar de perder.Break-evens: A at 1000/50 = 20 customers; B at 4000/90 = 44.4 → 45 customers. B takes longer to stop losing.
  3. B supera a A donde las rectas se cruzan: 90x − 4000 = 50x − 1000 → 40x = 3000 → x = 75. Con menos de 75 clientes gana más A; con más de 75, B.B overtakes A where the lines cross: 90x − 4000 = 50x − 1000 → 40x = 3000 → x = 75. Below 75 customers A earns more; above 75, B.

The steeper slope wins in the end, but only if you reach the crossing. Until then the high fixed costs weigh.

Caso 6: de dos datos a la funciónCase 6: from two data points to the function

You are not given the costs. You only know that with 10 customers a shop lost 500 € and with 30 it made 700 €. If profit is linear, find the function, the fixed costs and the break-even.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. Pendiente = lo que cambia el beneficio entre lo que cambian los clientes: (700 − (−500))/(30 − 10) = 1200/20 = 60 € por cliente.Slope = change in profit over change in customers: (700 − (−500))/(30 − 10) = 1200/20 = 60 € per customer.
  2. Ordenada en el origen: B(10) = −500 = n + 60·10 → n = −1100. Los gastos fijos son 1100 €.Intercept: B(10) = −500 = n + 60·10 → n = −1100. Fixed costs are 1100 €.
  3. B(x) = 60x − 1100. Comprueba con el otro dato: 60·30 − 1100 = 700. Equilibrio: 1100/60 = 18,3 → 19 clientes.B(x) = 60x − 1100. Check with the other data point: 60·30 − 1100 = 700. Break-even: 1100/60 = 18.3 → 19 customers.

Two points determine the line. It is what a spreadsheet does when you give it two months of results.

Caso 7: un dato que no es seguroCase 7: a figure that is not certain

¿Y si los gastos fijos suben 500 €?Go back to case 1 (2400 € fixed, 160 € per customer, 90 € cost per customer). The cost per customer is an estimate and could be 20 % higher. How does the break-even change? And if fixed costs rise by 500 €?

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. Gasto por cliente 90·1,2 = 108 €. Margen 160 − 108 = 52 €. Equilibrio 2400/52 = 46,2 → 47 clientes, frente a 35. Margin 160 − 108 = 52 €. Break-even 2400/52 = 46.2 → 47 customers, against 35. A 20 % higher cost per customer moves the break-even by 35 %: the slope rules.
Fixed 2900 with the original margin of 70: 2900/70 = 41.4 → 42 customers. Every 70 € of fixed cost costs one more break-even customer.

With JavaScript, here you see how many customers the break-even moves with each change.

Try this: raise the fixed costs and see that the slope does not change; raise the cost per customer past the price and watch the line go down; set fixed revenue above fixed costs and look for the negative break-even; finally type a target and check the number of customers with the equation.

Conviene saberlo: donde se pierden los puntosGood to know: where the marks are lost

Mixing terms with x and without. 33,400 + 50,400x is not 83,800x. Only terms with the same letter group together.
  • El signo al pasar dividiendo. −70x = −2000 → x = −2000/(−70) = +28,57. The sign when moving across dividing. −70x = −2000 → x = −2000/(−70) = +28.57. What multiplies moves across dividing with its sign; it does not change sign as well.
  • Redondear el equilibrio hacia abajo. 28,57 clientes significa que con 28 pierdes. El primer entero con beneficio es 29.Rounding the break-even down. 28.57 customers means that with 28 you lose. The first whole number with profit is 29.
Forgetting the sign of the slope. If the cost per customer exceeds the price, there is no break-even to look for.
Giving a percentage margin without saying over what. On revenue and on costs are two different numbers.
Mixing months and years. Monthly fixed costs with yearly revenue per customer give a meaningless line. Everything in the same time unit.
Reading a negative x as an error. A negative break-even is correct: it is the number of customers you can afford to lose.
Taking the profit on the line as net profit. Tax, depreciation and interest are missing. The line is the first analysis, not the accounts.

300 + 2x = 5x → 300 = 3x → x = 100 pedidos. Ahí las dos cuestan 500 €.300 + 2x = 5x → 300 = 3x → x = 100 orders. There both cost 500 €.

c)

Con 60: A = 420 €, B = 300 €; conviene B, ahorra 120 €. Con 150: A = 600 €, B = 750 €; conviene A, ahorra 150 €.With 60: A = 420 €, B = 300 €; B is better, saves 120 €. With 150: A = 600 €, B = 750 €; A is better, saves 150 €.

d)

B starts lower but climbs faster, so it catches up with A and overtakes it at x = 100.

A café does not know its exact costs. One day with 20 customers it lost 140 €; another day with 50 customers it made 310 €. Assume daily profit is a linear function of the number of customers.

  1. a)(1,2 puntos) Calcula la pendiente y escribe la función.(1.2 points) Find the slope and write the function.
  2. b)(0,9 puntos) ¿Cuánto son los gastos fijos diarios y cuál es el punto de equilibrio?(0.9 points) What are the daily fixed costs and what is the break-even point?
  3. c)(0,9 puntos) Si el alquiler sube y los gastos fijos crecen un 10 %, ¿cuántos clientes más hacen falta para el equilibrio?(0.9 points) If the rent rises and fixed costs grow by 10 %, how many more customers are needed to break even?

The rubric is ours and is only a guide. In Year 12 there are no official marking criteria as in the PAU; what always counts is the equation set up properly and the result interpreted.
