The electric field in PAU Physics asks for three things: adding vectors properly, treating potential as a signed number, and knowing when Gauss gives you the field and when it does not. Here are the must-knows, five worked examples, a simulation to move charges in and out of a closed surface and a 45-minute mock with a rubric.

Parte 1Part 1

Lo imprescindible del campo eléctricoThe must-knows of the electric field

It is the twin of the gravitational field with one difference: charge has a sign. That is why there is attraction and repulsion, and potential can be positive or negative.

01 · Coulomb y campo01 · Coulomb and field

F = (KQq/r²)·ur  ·  E = (KQ/r²)·ur  ·  F = q·E

K = 9·109 N·m²/C². The field points where a positive test charge would go. A negative charge feels the force opposite to the field: same E, opposite force.

02 · superposición02 · superposition

The method never changes: sketch, unit vector, size, add by components. The size goes in front and ur gives the direction, with magnitude 1. If the question gives E as a vector, equate component by component.

03 · potencial y energía03 · potential and energy

El potencial es un número con signo, y se suma sin vectoresPotential is a signed number, added without vectors

V = KQ/r  ·  Ep = KQq/r  ·  W = −ΔEp = q·(VA − VB)

Here Q goes in with its sign: a negative charge gives negative potential. The field points where potential drops. A positive charge released at rest moves by itself towards lower potential.

04 · flujo04 · flux

Φ = E·S·cos α  ·  en generalin general Φ = ∮ E·dS

Unidades: N·m²/C.α is the angle between E and the normal. On a closed surface the normal points outwards: what leaves counts plus and what enters counts minus. Units: N·m²/C.

05 · teorema de Gauss05 · Gauss's law

El flujo por una superficie cerrada solo depende de la carga de dentroThe flux through a closed surface depends only on the charge inside

Φ = Qint/ε0  ·  ε0 = 8,85·10−12 C²/(N·m²)  ·  K = 1/(4πε0)

It holds for any closed surface, of any shape. Qint is the net charge inside, with signs. A charge outside changes the field at every point of the surface, but its total flux is zero: everything that enters on one side leaves on the other.

06 · sacar E con Gauss06 · getting E from Gauss

Gauss solo te da E si hay simetríaGauss only gives you E if there is symmetry

Entonces Φ = E·S, y despejas E = Qint/(ε0·S). Sin simetría, Gauss sigue siendo cierto pero no te deja despejar E.The trick is to pick a surface where E has the same size at every point and is perpendicular to it. Then Φ = E·S, and you solve E = Qint/(ε0·S). Without symmetry, Gauss is still true but you cannot solve for E.

In a conductor at equilibrium, E = 0 inside and the charge moves to the surface. The potential inside is not zero: it is constant and equal to the surface value.

07 · la trampa07 · the trap

Carga encerrada cero no significa campo ceroZero enclosed charge does not mean zero field

Pruébalo en la simulación de la parte 3.If there is +q and −q inside, Qint = 0 and the flux is zero. But the field on the surface is not zero: it leaves on one side and enters on the other by the same amount. E = 0 only follows when there is also symmetry, as inside a charged spherical shell. Try it in the simulation in part 3.

Usa K = 9·109 N·m²/C² y ε0 = 8,85·10−12 C²/(N·m²). Use K = 9·109 N·m²/C² and ε0 = 8.85·10−12 C²/(N·m²). Try each one before you open the solution.

Ejemplo 1: dos cargas iguales y un campo dadoExample 1: two equal charges and a given field

Dos cargas iguales q están en (0, 2) y (0, −2) m. Halla q para que el campo en P(3, 0) sea E = 4·10³ i N/C.Two equal charges q sit at (0, 2) and (0, −2) m. Find q so that the field at P(3, 0) is E = 4·10³ i N/C.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
Write the data as a vector: E = (4·10³, 0) N/C. It points towards +x, so the charges are positive.
  2. Distancias: r = √(3² + 2²) = √13 m en los dos casos, luego r² = 13.Distances: r = √(3² + 2²) = √13 m for both, so r² = 13.
  3. Unitarios, de cada carga hacia P: u1 = (3, −2)/√13 y u2 = (3, 2)/√13.Unit vectors, from each charge towards P: u1 = (3, −2)/√13 and u2 = (3, 2)/√13.
  4. Suma: las y se anulan por simetría y queda E = (2·(Kq/13)·(3/√13), 0).Add: the y parts cancel by symmetry, leaving E = (2·(Kq/13)·(3/√13), 0).
  5. Iguala la componente x: 6Kq/(13√13) = 4·10³.Equate the x component: 6Kq/(13√13) = 4·10³.

q ≈ 3,47·10−6 C = 3,47 μC.q ≈ 3.47·10−6 C = 3.47 μC.

Ejemplo 2: potencial y trabajoExample 2: potential and work

A a B.A 4 μC charge sits at the origin and a −2 μC charge at (4, 0) m. Find the potential at A(0, 3) and at B(4, 3), and the work done by the field in taking a 2 μC charge from A to B.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
Desde B, al revés: 5 m y 3 m.Distances from A: 3 m to the first and 5 m to the second. From B, the other way round: 5 m and 3 m.
  2. VA = K·(4·10−6/3 − 2·10−6/5) = 8,4·10³ V. El signo de la segunda carga entra en la cuenta.VA = K·(4·10−6/3 − 2·10−6/5) = 8.4·10³ V. The sign of the second charge goes into the sum.
  3. VB = K·(4·10−6/5 − 2·10−6/3) = 1,2·10³ V.VB = K·(4·10−6/5 − 2·10−6/3) = 1.2·10³ V.
  4. W = q·(VA − VB) = 2·10−6·7,2·10³ = 1,44·10−2 J.W = q·(VA − VB) = 2·10−6·7.2·10³ = 1.44·10−2 J.

It comes out positive: a positive charge moves by itself towards lower potential and the field does the work.

Ejemplo 3: esfera conductora con GaussExample 3: conducting sphere with Gauss

A conducting sphere of radius 10 cm carries 5 nC. Find E at 5 cm, 10 cm and 30 cm from the centre, and the potential inside.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
Spherical symmetry: pick concentric spheres. On each one E has the same size and is radial, so Φ = E·4πr².
Φ = 0 y, por la simetría, E = 0.At 5 cm the Gaussian sphere encloses no charge: in a conductor all the charge sits on the surface. Φ = 0 and, by symmetry, E = 0.
A 10 cm, E = 4,5·10³ N/C. A 30 cm, E = 5,0·10² N/C.From 10 cm outwards it encloses the 5 nC: E = KQ/r². At 10 cm, E = 4.5·10³ N/C. At 30 cm, E = 5.0·10² N/C.
Potential at the surface: V = KQ/R = 450 V. Inside, E = 0, so V does not change: 450 V throughout.

E = 0 dentro, pero V = 450 V, no cero.E = 0 inside, but V = 450 V, not zero.

Ejemplo 4: hilo infinitoExample 4: infinite wire

A very long wire has a charge density λ = 2 μC/m. Use Gauss to find the field 20 cm from the wire.

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
Cylindrical symmetry: E is radial, points away from the wire and has the same size at the same distance.
Surface: a cylinder of radius r and length L with the wire on its axis. There is no flux through the ends, because E runs parallel to them.
  3. Por la cara lateral: Φ = E·2πrL. Carga encerrada: λL.Through the side: Φ = E·2πrL. Enclosed charge: λL.
  4. Gauss: E·2πrL = λL/ε0. La L se va: E = λ/(2πε0r).Gauss: E·2πrL = λL/ε0. L cancels: E = λ/(2πε0r).

E ≈ 1,8·105 N/C, hacia fuera del hilo.E ≈ 1.8·105 N/C, pointing away from the wire.

Ejemplo 5: flujo sin calcular el campoExample 5: flux without working out the field

Hay tres cargas: q1 = +3 nC, q2 = −5 nC y q3 = +2 nC. La superficie S1 encierra q1 y q2. S2 encierra q1 y q3. S3 encierra las tres. Halla el flujo por cada una. ¿Es E = 0 en S3?There are three charges: q1 = +3 nC, q2 = −5 nC and q3 = +2 nC. Surface S1 encloses q1 and q2. S2 encloses q1 and q3. S3 encloses all three. Find the flux through each one. Is E = 0 on S3?

Ver la soluciónSee the solution
  1. S1: Qint = −2 nC, luego Φ = −2·10−9/ε0 ≈ −226 N·m²/C. Negativo: entra más de lo que sale.S1: Qint = −2 nC, so Φ = −2·10−9/ε0 ≈ −226 N·m²/C. Negative: more enters than leaves.
  2. S2: Qint = +5 nC, luego Φ ≈ 565 N·m²/C. La q2 de fuera no cuenta.S2: Qint = +5 nC, so Φ ≈ 565 N·m²/C. The q2 outside does not count.
  3. S3: Qint = 0, luego Φ = 0.S3: Qint = 0, so Φ = 0.

No hay simetría, así que Gauss no te deja decir nada de E.On S3 the flux is zero, but E is not: the three charges create a field at every point of the surface. There is no symmetry, so Gauss tells you nothing about E.

Simulación: el teorema de Gauss con cargas que entran y salenSimulation: Gauss's law with charges moving in and out

The dashed circle is a slice through a Gaussian sphere. Drag the charges to move them in and out. Drag the sphere to move it and its edge to change the radius. Watch what changes in the flux and what changes in the field.

Mete y saca cargas de una superficie cerradaMove charges in and out of a closed surface

Each charge is ±1 μC. The arrows on the surface are the field at that point: green if it leaves, amber if it enters. The flux is worked out two ways: with Gauss, Qint/ε0, and by adding E·dS point by point over the whole sphere. They must agree.

The simulation needs JavaScript. Without it, the idea is this: the flux depends only on the charge inside, and the field depends on all of them.

Rojo: carga positiva. Azul: carga negativa. Red: positive charge. Blue: negative charge. Try this: put +q and −q inside and look at the arrows; then take a charge out and bring it back in from another side; finally pick the shell and move the Gaussian sphere inside and outside it.

Concluding E = 0 from Qint = 0. Zero net charge gives zero flux. The field is only zero if there is also symmetry.
Counting charges outside. They add nothing to the flux, though they do change the field on the surface.
Using Gauss without symmetry. If E does not have the same size all over the surface, you cannot take it out of the integral.
  • Olvidar el signo en el potencial. V = KQ/r lleva el signo de Q. El módulo del campo, no.Forgetting the sign in the potential. V = KQ/r carries the sign of Q. The size of the field does not.
  • Confundir plano y conductor. Un plano cargado da σ/(2ε0). Junto a la superficie de un conductor, σ/ε0.Mixing up plane and conductor. A charged plane gives σ/(2ε0). Next to a conductor's surface, σ/ε0.
Saying V = 0 inside a conductor. What is zero is E. V is constant.
